Why the Suburbs?

The founders of The Second Step intentionally chose to locate the program in a well-resourced Boston suburb. Their reasons:
  •  Domestic violence happens in the suburbs too! The Second Step provides a variety of resources for domestic-violence survivors who need support, safety planning, advocacy, and an embracing community.
  • Key members of the City government, including the mayor, have been committed to the program from the beginning and continue to support it actively.
  • While living in the residences, clients and families can take advantage of extraordinarily strong public schools, plentiful subsidized-housing options, and a well-developed social-services infrastructure.
  • Midway between the dense urban center of Boston and the outlying suburbs, and easily accessible by public transportation, the residences are situated where families from both urban and suburban environments can feel comfortable.
