How are The Second Step's residences different from a shelter?
  • The Second Step provides housing for survivors of abuse through an application process rather than on an emergency basis.
  • The Second Step's residences are staffed only during the days and evenings, with staff on call for overnight emergencies.
  • Families may live in the residences at The Second Step for up to two years, during which time they have access to a range of supportive services.
  • The Second Step provides additional follow-up in the communities for graduates of its Transitional Housing Program.
